How To Install Cinnamon Desktop on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail

Recently, I wrote a post on how to install Linux Deepin Desktop on Ubuntu. Today, I'd like to write another post to install another desktop environment which can be installed on Ubuntu called Cinnamon. Cinnamon is developed by Linux Mint team which aims to create a flexible, easy-to-use, and full-featured desktop environment with traditional layout. The latest version of Cinnamon when I write this post is Cinnamon 1.8 which brings with a lot of bug fixes, many new features and enhancements.

Before we dive deeper into installation steps, below are some new things on Cinnamon 1.8:
  • New interface for Nemo File Manager
  • Cinnamon 1.8 comes with its own screensaver
  • All configuration modules are now present in Cinnamon Settings.
  • Added "desklets" on desktop. The same way you can add applets to your panel, you can add desklets to your desktop.
  • Ability to install spice from the desktop. There is no need to open web browser to download spices.

  • Better hot-corner configuration
  • Coverflow Alt-Tab
  • Timeline Alt-Tab
  • Horizontal/Vertical maximizing of windows
Install Cinnamon 1.8 on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail
Installing Cinnamon on Ubuntu is a piece of cake because there is a PPA which contains the latest stable release of Cinnamon. So, open Terminal and execute the following comman:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install cinnamon nemo
Once installed, please logout and you will see Cinnamon session on your Login screen as shown in the picture below:

If you decided to remove Cinnamon, simply run this command:
  • sudo apt-get remove cinnamon nemo

Good luck!
