Ubuntu window buttons back to the right

So you upgraded or installed Ubuntu 10.04 and you are frustrated with those annoying minimize, maximize and close window buttons on the left? In case you don't know, they can easily be moved back to the right while we wait for Canonical to unveil what's in store for that right window side.

If you have tried to fix this already, I am sure you have stumbled with bash scripts or long terminal commands that were supposed to fix this by tweaking system settings (usually using gconf). The problem with such approach is that configuration changes may have an impact on future themes that could take advantage of such feature.

The solution is actually a lot easier. The themes that sport the infamous button location shift are only Ambiance, Radiance and Dust, so switching to any of the old ones would restore the button location back to the right. That's nice, but how about moving those buttons to the right for the new themes as well? Simply follow these easy steps:

1. Go to the Ubuntu main menu, System > Preferences > Appearance
2. Click on the "Themes" tab and choose any old theme (i.e., "Human").
3. Click the “Customize..” button to tweak the theme configuration.
4. Now, click on the “Controls” tab and select “Ambiance” (or any other new theme)
5. Then, click on “Window border” tab and select “Ambiance” (again, you may choose any of the new ones)
6. DONE! Simply save the theme if you want to be able to use it in the future.

Note that I haven't specified any changes to icons, as those don't necessarily relate to window controls or button location, but you can obviously change them as well if you so desire.

So there you have it, easy, quick and non-destructive.
