Top 5 Reasons to have a Linux Live CD

Ubuntu is one of the most popular free and open source software available. A 2012 survey revealed it is the most popular Linux Distribution on desktop and laptop PCs. Below are some of the reasons why you should have Live CD / DVD with Ubuntu, or other Linux distribution.

1) You Have a Virus

Even if you're a Windows user, there is a strong possibility you will need a live CD or DVD. Every program on Ubuntu is available in a fully installed system or live version. The live DVD with Ubuntu 12.10, the latest version, only uses about 768 Mb of RAM. This is a fully functional operating system, which means you can store applications and have access to a virus scanner. Many times if you have a really nasty virus in Windows, it attaches itself to Windows and it's hard to get rid of that virus. If you run a virus scan from a live media, it cannot attach itself to a host, much like a biological virus, meaning it's virtually defenseless.

2) Retrieving Lost Information

You can find files and copy them to a different source. Let's say a boot sector got corrupted during travel, you'd be able to retrieve everything important off the drive and put them on an external drive. I was able to then reinstall and nothing was lost, I did all this on a Linux drive.

3) Bypass Restrictions

Say for some reason or another, you can't get into your computer. Restrictive boss, privacy protections, even from your wireless internet providers, whatever the case may be. If you can make it boot from the Live CD, you can boot it up and do whatever you need to do. The only restriction you may not be able to bypass is encrypted HDDs.

4) Learn Commands

Let's say you do plan on installing Ubuntu, but you don't want to do it before you know how to use it. It's a good way to learn the Unix commands without having to install it on your hard drive or completely destroying your system.

5) Try Before You Buy

You could pop in a live CD, see what you think and if you like it, you can install the complete version. So if you like a new app and may want to test the usability or just to see if you like it. You may try it and love it, but you also may try it and decide you don't like it, once you've installed the Operating System, it may be too late. This is why being able to use something before you buy it or install it, is great with Live CD.
